The house features authentic items that span more than 250 years. The farm encompasses 25 acres of land and provides a first-hand look at structures like a limekiln, blacksmith shop and windmill. Description:
Spiritual mysticism, religious dedication, and Germanic medieval architectural design are part of the austere beauty at this community. The Ephrata Cloister dates back to 1732, when it centered around a congregation of devout celibates who practiced a simple life based on self-denial. The community was renowned for its artistic skills, which include original music and a form of broken letter calligraphy known as "Fraktur." The community dissolved in 1934.

In 1719, immigrant Hans Herr built a small stone structure. That building became America's first Mennonite meeting house, and the property he purchased with his family, about 10,000 acres, became a self-sufficient village. The Hans Herr House features orchards, gardens, and a blacksmith shop that are open to tour. An interesting tidbit is that artist Andrew Wyeth is a descendant of Herr's and has painted the property often.

This mansion was the home of an Irish born, but American entrenched revolutionary, General Edward Hand and remains a classic example of 18th century life. Historic Rock Ford Plantation, built in 1794, is Georgian in style and has a center hall. The home features a number of furnishings and artifacts from the time period. General Hand, reared in Ireland, came to America as a surgeon's assistant in the 18th Royal Irish Regiment. Upon retiring in 1774, he stayed in the colonies to practice medicine and then joined the Continental Army in 1775.

Home to America's only bachelor president, James Buchanan, Wheatland still displays the grandeur of 19th century life. The rooms are elegantly decorated in Victorian style and illustrate the luxuries of life during this time period. Sitting on four acres, the property contains the Wheatland mansion, carriage house, and various outbuildings. In December, special candlelight tours are given of the home. Call ahead for details.
